Headwaters Corner

A unique historical property located in the heart of Calabasas, Headwaters Corner provides access to open space and recreation in a convenient location. This former homestead is home to the historic Masson House, which dates to the 1890s and is currently one of the oldest buildings in Calabasas. An easy loop trail wanders through 12 acres of natural habitat, which serves as a wildlife corridor in an increasingly developed area. Unique features include Dry Canyon Creek, one of the westernmost tributaries of the LA River.

TreePeople Land Trust acquired and transferred the property to the city of Calabasas in 2004, and soon after began restoration of the degraded creek in 2007. 20 years later, the formerly channelized streambed of Dry Canyon Creek is once again a healthy, functioning riparian ecosystem. A diverse range of wildlife call this area home, including mule deer, bobcats, coyotes and a wide variety of bird species.

Headwaters Corner is managed by TreePeople Land Trust, with the open space property open to the public. In 2017 the Old Fire burned TPLT’s former offices onsite. The Masson House is currently being used as our temporary office space, with plans to eventually rebuild the site as a wildfire resiliency education center.
